The energy researches has carried out more half-century in Komi science centre. Their beginning was started at the end of the 40-th years in connection with the electrificational tasks of a village and wood economy for Republic of Komi. In 1953 the energy was issued as an independent scientific direction after creation of a Department of Energy and Water Economy agreeably to the Decisions of USSR AS Presidium. In 1975 the water economic subjects has passed to the economists and the Department has concentrated on energy researches. According to the re-structuring program of the Ural division of RAS during 1998 the department should enter into structure of Institute of economic and social problems of North with possible renaming of the latter.
According to state on August, 1998 the Department of Energy was numbered 30 employees in its structure, including 16 scientific them with 1 doctor and 10 candidates of sciences. The greatest number - 40 men - the Department had in 1990. In creation and development of a Department A.I.Baranov, L.A.Bratcev, V.A.Vitiazeva, Ja.A.Supriaga, A.F.Anufriev, N.A.Manov, A.A.Kalinina, M.I.Uspensky, V.I.Zorkalcev, Ju.Ja.Chukreew have played the important role. In 1981 assignment of the professor A.A.Makarov by the scientific adviser of the Department from phisic-techical power Division of USSR Academy of sciences and the department research support by the academicians L.A.Melentev, V.I.Popkov, Ju.N.Rudenko, V.P.Skripov, O.N.Favorsky had large influence. The created in Komi SC by d.ph.-m.s. R.I.Pimenov and now headed by d.ph.-m.s. N.A.Gromov, who began his scientific activity in the Department, mathematical direction was arose in the Department of Energy.

Main scientific directions of a Department is system power researches of northern regions, theory and methods of a research of a reliability and survival of regional power systems. The national economic importance of department scientific workings out was determined first of all by tasks of a fuel and energy complex development of the European North-East and by support of a power system reliability. With the their solution purpose by a Department since 1955 more two tens scientific and scientific-practical conferences are carried out in Syktyvkar, in which many leading power specialists of Russia (USSR), scientists, industrial employees and chiefs of Republic of Komi took part.
Technical and economic estimation of fuel and energy resources of the European North-East and directions of their rational use; learning of influence of the frozen factor at designing and construction of mines in the Pechora coal pool; forecast of hydrological conditions of a flooding zone and influence on a national economy of Komi ĀSSR planned drain transference of the Pechora and Wychegda rivers in Volga pool; power perfecting of industrial nodes, branches and national economy of Komi ĀSSR; substantiation of development perspectives of electric power industry, coal, petroleum and gas industry of the European North-East; working out of the system research methodology of regional energy complexes; creation of mathematical models and software for a research of a reliability of the United Power System of Russia (USSR); scientific substantiation of microprocessor engineering application for relay protection of power systems; development of forecasting and analysis methods of operation efficiency of fuel supply systems; development of mathematical methods of power system optimization; development of the expert system - adviser for operating mode control for Komi power system; creation of a qualitative analysis method of power system survival have concerned to the most important achievements of the Department. In 1998 for a cycle of works under the power strategy for Republic of Komi until 2010 the department scientists N.A.Manov and A.A.Kalinina were awarded the State Republic of Komi premium.

In period from the department creation moment its employees published 23 monographs, 23 subject collections, 68 scientific reports, more then 200 scientific articles, obtained 14 copyright certificates on the USSR (Russia) inventions, maintained two doctoral and 17 candidate thesises.
